1984年にアメリカの歌手スティーヴィー・ワンダーが発表した曲です。
映画「The Woman in Red／ウーマン・イン・レッド」の主題歌として発売され全世界で大ヒット。アカデミー賞とゴールデン・グローブ賞を獲得しました。
こちらの曲、実は1979年に日本の兄弟デュオ「ブレッド&バター」へ提供された曲でした。歌詞はサビの「I just called to say I love you」のみ存在し、作詞には松任谷由実、編曲には細野晴臣という豪華陣が参加。「特別な気持ちで」というタイトルでの発売が決定していました。ただ、直前で映画の主題歌が決まってしまい発売は中止。改めて許可が下りて1986年に発売されました。
その後、スティーヴィーがこの曲の制作にあたり仲間から訴えられた際、二人に送ったデモテープが証拠となりスティーヴィー側が勝訴。そのお礼に「REMEMBER MY LOVE」という曲を二人に送りました。

からきていると思われます。

（「I care」は「気にかけている」などの意味で
「how much I care」で「どれだけ大切に思っているか」
「どれだけ気にかけているか」などの意味になります。
「bottom」は「底」や「一番下の部分」の意味。）

（「high／高い」は季節の「最盛期」も意味し
「真っ盛り」などの意味にもなります。
「harvest moon／収穫月」は日本で言う「中秋の名月」のこと。
アメリカで「鳥たちが南の空へと羽ばたく時期」は
9月から10月が最も多いそうです。）

（「Libra」は「天秤座」の意味。
「Libra sun／天秤座の太陽」は「天秤座生まれの人」つまり
9月23日～10月23日の時期を指しています。）
I just called to say how much I care, I do
（「I do／私は～する」は「そうする」を強調した意味でもあり
特に結婚式の誓いにおける「誓います」の意味でもあります。）
