1928年にドイツのオペラ「三文オペラ」のために書き下ろされた曲です。
1955年にはアメリカの歌手ルイ・アームストロングが英語でカバーし、後にグラミーの殿堂入りとなりました。
現代ではジャズの定番曲として有名です。
世界中でカバーされていますが、個人的にはアメリカの歌手フランク・シナトラのカバーが好きです。
タイトルの「Mack The Knife／ナイフのマック」はオペラの主人公の異名。歌詞は主人公を紹介する内容で、劇の冒頭で歌われるそうです。

「jackknife／ジャックナイフ」は「折り畳みナイフ」のこと。
「old」は「古い」の他に「熟練した」や
「手練れた」などの意味もあります。
「out of sight」は「視界の外」や「見えないところ」の意味。
「keep it out of sight」で
「それを人目につかないようにする」の意味になります。
「Fancy」は「上質」や「手の込んだ高級品」などの意味。）

「人に見つからないよう物陰に隠れて移動する」や
「物陰からこっそりと様子を伺う」などの意味。）

小型ながらも強力なエンジンを搭載した船のことだそうです。
「down by the ～」で「～の側で」などの意味。
「don’tcha」は「Don’t you ～／〜じゃない」を略したスラング。
「disappeared」は「行方不明」や「姿を消した」などの意味。
「earned」は「稼いだ」や「得た」などの意味。
「spends just like a sailor」は直訳すると
「水兵のように散財する」ですが、
これはアメリカのことわざ
「spend money like a drunken sailor／
酔った船乗りのように金を使う」からきていると思われます。
意味は日本語で言う「湯水のように金を使う」と同じです。）

マックに言い寄ろうとする女性だそうですが
「Miss Lotte Lenya／ロッテ・レーニャ」は
1931年の映画でジェニー・ダイヴァー役を
務めたオーストラリアの女優さんの名前で、
この曲を作曲したドイツの作曲家
クルト・ヴァイルの奥様だそうです。）

何度も耳にしたことがある曲ですが、ふと気になって訳した時に軽快な曲調とは裏腹な歌詞に驚きました。
日本語でもカバーされているのでぜひ聞いてみてください。ちなみに邦題は「匕首マック」。「匕首／あいくち」は鍔のない短刀のことだそうです。
