同年に公開されたアメリカ映画「Reality Bites」に収録されたことが切っ掛けで大ヒットし、レコード会社と未契約の状態で史上初のビルボード・チャート1位という快挙を成し遂げました。
日本でもCMで起用されたりラジオで繰り返し流れたことから知名度を高めました。

歌詞の場合は「自分の周りに浮遊している」つまり
存在が「寄り添っている」の意味合いで訳しました。
「weeping」は「涙を流している」などの意味で
「cry」より深く静かに悲しむ意味合いになります。
「throw」は「投げる」の意味ですが
「throw away」で「捨てる」や「廃棄する」の意味になります。
少し難しい歌詞だったので「this is」は「この曲」と訳しました。
この歌詞を機に内容が「恋人に捨てられた」ことから
「失恋に浸るのを捨てる」と転換していると解釈しています。）

この曲、個人的な解釈ですが、前半では単純に失恋に対して後悔している様子が描かれ、後半では、飴と鞭を使い分けて責任を押し付けながら、決して手放そうとはしない相手に気付き、未熟な恋をした自分に対して後悔している様子が描かれているように感じています。
聞く時期や年齢によって、また解釈が変わる曲かもしれません。
