1973年にアメリカのバンド、イーグルスが発表した曲です。
アルバム「Desperado」の収録曲でシングル化はされませんでしたが、あまりの素晴らしさに多くの歌手がカバーし、多くのメディアで使用され、今ではイーグルスの代表曲の一つとなりました。
2004年にはローリング・ストーン誌が選ぶ「史上最高の500曲」にも選ばれています。
後のアルバムにはライブ・バージョンも収録されています。生歌も涙を誘います。
歌詞はボーカルのドン・ヘンリーが当時の友人を想って書き、当初歌詞には「Leo／レオ」をいう名前が入っていたそうです。

「命知らず」「無法者」などの意味。
「why don’t you ～ ?」は「～したらどう？」の意味。
「come to senses」は「正気に戻る」や「我に返る」などの意味。
「riding fences」はアメリカの牧場で
馬に乗って柵を点検することを指します。
歌詞では自ら心に囲いを作って閉ざしていると解釈しています。
「a hard one」は「気難しい人」や「手強い相手」などの意味。）

（「beat you」は「あなたを打ち負かす」や
「あなたより優位に立つ」の意味。
「if able」は「もし可能なら」「もしできるなら」の意味。
「the queen of diamonds／ダイヤのクイーン」と
「the queen of hearts／ハートのクイーン」が出てきますが
付き合う女性は、派手な見た目で金がかかる人ではなく
確かな愛情をもつ人にしろよ、ということだと解釈しています。
「best bet」は「最善の策」や「おすすめの一手」などの意味。）

（「driving home」は「車で家まで送り届ける」の意味ですが
「逃げ場がないほどの核心をつく」のスラングでもあります。
「some people taking」は「一部の人たちがしている噂話」や
「世間が言っていること」などの意味。）

（「hard to tell」は「区別がつかない」や
「判断が難しい」などの意味。
「highs and lows」は直訳すると
「高いところと低いところ」の意味ですが
「感情の起伏」や「良い時と悪い時」
などを意味する慣用句でもあります。
「Ain’t it funny ～ ?」は「～は奇妙だと思わないか？」や
「～はおかしいと思わないか？」などの意味。）

（「～ better let ～」は「～は～しなきゃ」や
「～は～した方がいい」などの意味。
「let」には「許可する／許可をもらう」の意味合いがあるので
「受け入れなきゃ」と訳しました。）

カバーしたアーティストの中でもアメリカの歌手リンダ・ロンシュタットのカバーは、本家ヘンリーが褒め称えたことでも有名です。個人的にはカーペンターズのカバーも好きです。
