2002年にアメリカのブロードウェイ・ミュージカル「Hairspray／ヘアスプレー」のフィナーレ用に書き下ろされた曲です。
ミュージカルの原作は1988年の同名アメリカ映画です。評論家からは「歌わずにはいられない曲」と絶賛されました。2007年には映画がリメイク化され、ミュージカルに足を運ばない層への認知度も広めました。
人種差別や体型差別にも触れているこの曲は、1966年にアメリカのデュオ、アイク＆ティナ・ターナーが発表した「River Deep Mountain High」への敬意を込めて作られたそうです。

「beat」に「鼓動」の意味もあるので

リメイク版の映画で主人公の母親、大柄の女性エドナを演じたのはジョン・トラボルタ。特殊メイクとファットスーツも話題を集めました。男性が配役されたのは、オリジナル映画でもミュージカルでも、男性俳優が母親役を務めたことから伝統として引き継いだそうです。また、ミュージカルのスタッフや俳優も脇役でカメオ出演しています。そういう意味でも何度観ても楽しい映画です。
