1982年にアメリカの歌手マイケル・ジャクソンが発表した曲です。
翌年にアルバム「Thriller／スリラー」からのシングルとして発売されると、世界中で1800万枚を売り上げる大ヒット。アメリカではビルボードによる1983年の年間楽曲ランキングで2位を記録しました。
近年でもローリング・ストーン誌が選ぶ「オールタイム・グレイテスト・ソング500」において2004年に58位、2021年には44位にランクインしています。
かなり具体的な内容の歌詞ですが、曲を作ったマイケルは「自身の体験談ではない」としつつも、自分や兄弟に起こった話だと語ったそうです。
プロデューサーのクインシー・ジョーンズは、「Billie Jean／ビリー・ジーン」の名が特定の人に迷惑をかけるのではないかと危惧し、「Not my lover」というタイトルを薦めたそうです。ですがマイケルが「誰のことでもない」と強調した上で今のタイトルに決めました。

「beauty queen／美の女王」は「美人コンテストの優勝者」の意味で
転じて、町やその界隈で「飛びぬけた一番の美人」の意味合いにもなります。
「Don’t mind, but」は「私は構わないけど」や
「気にしないけど」などの意味。
「the one」は「運命の人」や「その人」の意味。
「floor in the round 」は「大勢の人で囲まれたフロア」や
「周囲の人々の注目を集める中央のフロア」などの意味。
「caused a scene」は「大騒ぎをする」や「騒ぎを起こす」などの意味。）

ちなみに「娘」は「daughter」とかなり長い綴りですが
「son」は古い英語から由来しているのに対し
「daughter」はヨーロッパの別の言語から由来した説や、
「息子」は「跡取り」であることから
単純に「子が生まれた」の意味合いがあるのに対し
「娘」は家事や家業の手伝いなどの意味合いも含まれている、
など理由が諸説あるそうです。）

聖書において「とても長い期間の過酷な試練」を意味するそうです。
なので「四十日の試練の昼と四十日の試練の夜」と訳しました。
「can stand」は直訳すると「立つことができる」ですが
「stand／立つ」は「地に足をつける」ことから
「耐える」や「我慢する」などの意味にもなり、
「耐えられる」や「我慢できる」などの意味にもなります。
「demand」は「要求」や「強要」などの意味。
「schemes／スキーム」は「企み」や「陰謀」などの意味。
「advice／アドバイス」は「忠告」や「助言」などの意味。
「think twice」は直訳すると「二度考える」ですが
「よく考える」や「慎重になる」などの意味です。
