1996年にアメリカのブロードウェイ・ミュージカル「レント」のために書き下ろされた曲です。
2005年の映画化の際は、出演者全員で歌唱されました。
主要登場人物8人の内、4人がエイズ感染者という設定で、その内1人が亡くなった際に歌われたことから、世界中のエイズ啓発関連で使用されることが多いです。

「RENT」はアメリカの脚本家ジョナサン・ラーソンが、ほぼ一人で脚本はおろか作詞作曲も仕上げたという力作です。35歳という若さで亡くなってしまいましたが、作品の素晴らしさは永遠です。
