アメリカの歌手シンディ・ローパーが1983年に発表した曲です。83年の10月に発売されてから84年まで世界中でロングヒットしました。
その影響で38以上のヴァージョンが作られ、1994年には「Hey Now」として新アレンジで再販されました。
作詞曲はロバート・ハザードです。当時、シンディは「女性を賛歌する曲を歌いたい」と考えていましたが、男性作家が男性目線で書いた今曲に違和感を感じていました。そこでプロデューサーのリック・チャートフと、女性の目線を取り入れて完成させたそうです。

「done」は「do」の過去分詞刑で
「やっている事が終わった」の意味です。）

「アメリカ以外」または「自分がいる場所以外」
の「世界」を意味するので
「自分以外の世界」と訳しました。

「明るい人」と訳されることもあります。）

発売当時の邦題は「ハイ・スクールはダンステリア」で、とんでも邦題の代表作として洋楽ファンの間では有名です。現在はカタカナ表記の「ガールズ・ジャスト・ワナ・ハヴ・ファン」で統一されています。
シンディの意志を知ってから聞くと、ただ楽しいだけでなく色んな立場の人が勇気をもらえる曲です。
