1963年にアメリカの歌手ボブ・ディランが発表した曲です。
元々はアルバム収録曲でしたが、リリース直後にマネージャーのアルバート・グロスマンがマネージメントを務める、ベトナム反戦を訴えていたアメリカのフォークグループ、ピーター・ポール&マリーにカバーされ大ヒット。その後、ボブからもシングルとして発売されました。
当時、人種差別撤廃運動の真っ只中だったアメリカで、運動の賛歌として愛唱されたそうです。数多くある彼の名曲の中でも、最も歌われた曲としても有名です。
この曲は1994年にはグラミーの殿堂入りを果たし、ロックの殿堂による「ロックン・ロールの歴史500曲」の1位にも選ばれました。
数々の名曲、そして名歌詞を世に送り出したボブ・ディランは2016年に歌手として世界初のノーベル文学賞を受賞しました。
