1994年にアメリカの歌手スキャットマン・ジョンが発表したデビュー曲です。
自身が抱えていた「吃音症」を逆に「スキャット」として曲に馴染ませ、ユーロビートやハウスを織り交ぜながら愉快に、そして力強く歌い上げた曲です。
発売当初はヒットとはなりませんでしたが、ラジオで流れるようになってから注目を集め、日本やヨーロッパを中心に大ヒットしました。
53歳という遅い年齢でデビューする以前は、ジャズピアニストをしてたジョン。メジャーデビューの話が来た時に、自身の吃音が世に知られてしまうことを恐れ奥様に相談したところ「それを歌にすればいいじゃない」と助言され、出来上がったのがこの曲だそうです。そう言った意味でも非常に深い愛情が感じられる曲です。

（「Scatman／スキャットマン」はジョンが作った造語です。
所々「吃音男」と訳しています。
「Scat／スキャット」はジャズなどで使われる
意味を持たない歌唱方法です。
「stutters」は「どもる」の意味。
「one way or another」は「何かにつけて」などの意味。
ジョンは「誰にだって隠し切れない問題がある」と
伝えたかったそうです。
「As a matter of fact」は「実際のところ」などの意味。
「don’t let nothing hold you back」は
「何にも邪魔させるな」や「何も躊躇わないで」の意味。）

（「gonna」は「going to／～するつもり」の口頭略で
少し砕けた言い方になります。
「Yo」は「おい」や「やあ」の意味で
同じ意味の「Hey」には挨拶の意味がありますが
「Yo」はもっと砕けた呼びかけになります。）

（「pleasing」は「人に喜びを与える」などの意味。
「politician」は「政治家」や、そのような意図がある人の意味。
「heathens」は元々「異教徒」の意味ですが
転じて「野蛮人」の意味でもあります。
「state」は「状況」や「状態」などの意味。
「condition」も「状態」を意味しますが
特定の物事に対する「現状」などの意味合いがあります。）

（「professor」は「先生」や「教授」の意味で
「teacher」が教育機関全般の「先生」を指すのに対し
「professor」は専門分野の研究をする「先生」を指します。
「weeping」は「泣いている」の意味で
同じ意味の「crying」より「静かに泣いている」
「しくしく泣いている」の意味になります。
「While you’re still ～ the chance to be born」の歌詞は
ジョンがジャズピアニスト時代に作った曲『The Misfit』からの引用だそうです。）

少年時代から吃音を理由にいじめられていたジョンは、同じようにいじめられる子供たちを応援する為に作ったと語ったそうです。この5年後に亡くなってしまいますが、日本限定曲などを発売してくれるなど、日本にも沢山の笑顔を勇気をもたらしてくれた方で、一曲でもあります。
