1996年にイギリスのバンド、ジャミロクワイが発表した曲です。
奇妙で愉快な歌詞とディスコ風の曲調が評論家からも支持され、世界的にヒットしました。
MVではボーカルのジェイ・ケイの愛車、紫色のランボルギーニが登場。ジェイ・ケイのスーパーカー好きが周知されたMVでもあります。
また、MV用に用意されたスーパーカー2台が大破、破損したことでも有名。1台は運搬車に乗せようとした際に誤って全損。もう1台はMVでジェイ・ケイが運転している紫色のランボルギーニ。ジェイ・ケイは「宇宙は紫色」という気持ちを抱いていたことから、車の全損を聞いて愛車を手配。先に車を運搬し、誰にも運転しないよう指示したそうですが、現場に到着するとフロントガラスが粉々に。スタッフが崖の上からカメラを落としてしまったとか。
なのでMVの中でジェイ・ケイはフロントガラス無しで運転しています。目をしっかり開けられなかったと後に語っていました。

「magnetize」は「磁力を帯びさせる」などの意味ですが
転じて人を「魅了する」などの意味にもなります。）

それほど広がる規模や大きな神秘を指し

宇宙空間に存在する物理的に星や月を指します。
「close encounter／接近遭遇」は宇宙人やUFOなど
未知のものとの「近距離での遭遇」を意味します。
「flounder」は名詞だと魚の「ヒラメ」や「カレイ」の意味ですが
動詞だと「じたばたする」や「もがく」などの意味になります。）

歌詞はジェイ・ケイがクラブで出会った女性との実話を基に書かれたそうです。ただ、ジェイ・ケイにとって「Cosmic Girl」は特定の誰かに演じてもらうより、愛車の方がしっくりくると思いMVに反映されたそうです。スーパーカー大好きですね。
