1987年にアメリカの歌手、ベリンダ・カーライルが発表した曲です。彼女にとって現時点で唯一のアメリカ・ビルボードHOT100の首位獲得作品であり、イギリスのチャートでも2週連続1位を獲得するなど、世界中で人気を博した曲です。日本では翌年からCM曲として使われ、それ以降も長年に渡り愛されている曲です。
評論家からも絶賛され、中には「音楽史の変化における重要な一曲」と称した方もいたそうです。MVにはカーライルの夫である俳優のモーガン・メイソンが出演しています。

この曲が発表される前の1986年にアメリカのバンド、ボン・ジョヴィが発表した「Livin’ on a Prayer」と、メロディーが酷似していると、後にボン・ジョヴィ側から非難されました。盗作問題は後が絶ちませんが、両方好きな曲です。
