2003年にアメリカ・ブロードウェイのミュージカル「ウィキッド」のために書き下ろされた曲です。
初めての収録は初演を務めたエルファバ役のイディナ・メンゼルと、グリンダ役のクリスティン・チェノウェスで行われました。
劇中で第一幕のフィナーレとして歌われる曲で、作品を象徴する曲として愛されています。
様々な作品や歌手にカバーされていますが、2024年にはミュージカルの映画化でエルファバ役を務めたシンシア・エリヴォと、グリンダ役を務めたアリアナ・グランデが歌唱しました。今回はそちらを訳します。ミュージカルとは少し歌詞が異なります。

＜エルファバ・パート＞
Something has changed within me

（「within」は「～の中」や「～の内部」などの意味。
「something is not the same／何かが同じではない」には
「以前の状態や本来の状態と比べて」の意味合いが付きます。
「through with」は「～をやめた」や「～を終えた」などの意味。）
Too late for second–guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It’s time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes and leap
（「second-guessing」は
決断に不安や疑問を抱き再考することを指します。
そこから「一人でくよくよ考え込む様子」などを意味します。
「It’s time to ～」は「～する時がきた」や
「そろそろ～の時」などの意味。
「instincts」は「直感」や「本能」などの意味。
「leap」は「飛び越える」や「跳躍する」などの意味。）
It’s time to try defying gravity
I think I’ll try defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye, I’m defying gravity
And you can’t pull me down
（「defy」は「逆らう」や「抗う」などの意味。
「pull down」は「引き下ろす」などの意味。）
＜グリンダ・パート＞
Can’t I make you understand
You’re having delusions of grandeur?
（「delusions」は「妄想」や「思い込み」などの意味。
「grandeur」は「偉大」は「壮大」などの意味。
「having delusions of grandeur」で「誇大妄想を抱いている」
や「自分が実際より偉大だと勘違いしている」の意味になります。）
＜エルファバ・パート＞
I’m through accepting limits
‘Cause someone says they’re so
Some things I cannot change
But ‘til try, I’ll never know
（「I’m through」は「うんざりだ」や
「もう終わりだ」などの意味。
「accepting」は「受け入れる」や「容認する」などの意味。
「’til」は「until／～まで」の略。）
Too long I’ve been afraid of
Losing love, I guess I’ve lost
Well, if that’s love, it comes at
At much too high a cost
（「it comes at ～」は直訳すると「それは来る」ですが
「～という犠牲を伴う」の意味で使われることもあります。）
I’d sooner buy defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye, I’m defying gravity
And you can’t pull me down
（「sooner」は「より早く」や「～するや否や」などの意味で
「I’d sooner」で「むしろ～したい」や
「～する方がましだ」などの意味になります。）
So if you care to find me
Look to the western sky
As someone told me lately
“Everyone deserves the chance to fly”
And if I’m flying solo
At least, I’m flying free
（「care to ～」は「する気がある」や
「～したいと思う」の意味。
「deserves」は「値する」や「価値がある」などの意味。
同じ意味の「worth」が場所や時間を指すのに対し
「deserves」は人や行動を指します。
「least」は「最も小さい」の意味で
「At least」で「少なくとも」や「せめて」の意味になります。）
To those who’d ground me
Take a message back from me
Tell them how I’m defying gravity
I’m flying high, defying gravity
（「ground me」は「地面に留まらせる」や
「地面に縛り付ける」などの意味。
「Take back」は「引き取る」などの意味で
「Take a message back」で
「伝言を持ち帰る」の意味になります。）
And soon, I’ll match them in renown
And, nobody in all of OZ
No wizard that there is or was
Is ever gonna bring me down
（「I’ll match them in ～」は
「私は彼らの～に肩を並べる」や
「私は彼らの～に匹敵する存在になる」などの意味。
「renown／リナウン」は「名声」や「高名」などの意味。
「bring me down」は「私をがっかりさせる」や
「私を落ち込ませる」または「私を失脚させる」などの意味ですが
歌詞の内容から直訳の「bring down／引きずり下ろす」の方が
合うと思いそちらで訳しました。）
＜グリンダ・パート＞
I hope you’re happy
（「I hope ～」は「～でありますように」や
「～だといいな」「～を願う」などの意味。）
＜オズの住人パート＞
Look at her!
She’s wicked!
Kill her!
No one mourns the wicked
So we’ve got to bring her down
（「wicked」は「邪悪」や「不道徳」などの意味。
「mourns」は「哀悼する」や「弔う」などの意味。
「got to ～」は「～しなければならない」の意味。）

歌詞の通り、ミュージカルはアメリカの児童文学「オズの魔法使い」の世界観を基に作られています。そちらを知ると、より作品を楽しめるかもしれません。
